Fine example of a Japanned 18th century military hanger/cutlass.
The japanned blade measures 28 inches in length and has a single broad fuller which runs almost to the tip. The japanned hilt consists of a wooden grip with a single ferrule, gilt back-strap terminating into a 'bird's head' pommel, pronounced stirrup or 'P' shaped knuckle-guard having a slit cut into it, for a sword knot and two gilt langets.
Altogether, a very attractive example of this type of sword.
